"Soul of the Deer"
Representing the soul of the Huichol people, the maxa (deer) is the earthly manifestation of
Kawuyomaire. Kawuyomaire is a blue deer who travels the heavens as a guide and guardian, and he can be heard by the shaman. The Huichol Artisan sculpted the figurine from palo dulce wood
and covered it with colorful icons of their people.
Sculpted of palo dulce wood, it is reverently covered with sacred symbols created with colorful chaquira beads.
He first carves
the sculpture from palo dulce wood. The intricate motifs are formed with tiny chaquira beads, placed one at a time with a needle. Beeswax is used instead of glue.
